Your Commitment to Intellectual Self-Care
Look back at the “What Do You Want Your Brain to Do for You?” exercise. Grab your notebook and write down one thing you are willing to do in the next week to support your brain in doing the things you want it to do for you.
Now, imagine what barriers might come up as you are preparing to take this action. It could be an internal battle like not being in the mood or having a headache, or it could be an external barrier like you have an older car and you had plans to go to the museum, but your car won’t crank. Next, for each barrier you noted, come up with a way you might be able to overcome that barrier. What could you do instead or differently in support of your intellectual self-care? Based on what you came up with, complete the following sentence in your notebook: Even if or when (insert barrier), I will still (insert clear intention to act in support of intellectual self-care) because (insert why it is important to you to nurture your intellectual self-care).
Chapter Highlights
• To help your brain function to the best of its ability for as long as possible, you need to exercise it the same way you would exercise your body.
• Learning more about topics you already enjoy can be a great place to start when you want to stimulate your brain.
• Remembering back to when you were a child is one way to help you rediscover topics that excite you.
• Beginner’s mind helps you release judgments, expectations, and predictions about how something will go so that you can focus on what is new about the experience.
• A growth mind-set can support intellectual self-care by helping you be open to learning from failure and challenging yourself mentally.
